June Dinner and a Movie Roundup

in Dinner and a Movie

To mark the arrival of monsoon season in South Asia, this month’s Dinner and a Movie was Monsoon Wedding. It’s a drama that deals with some disturbing themes and yet still manages to be fun to watch. It’s a great movie with several interwoven plots and some great cinematography, but more importantly it inspired these wonderful dishes below.

I’m not sure if it’s the summer holidays or if there’s an alien ship swooping down and abducting food bloggers, but participation in this month’s Dinner and a Movie was depressingly low. Only 2 other awesome bloggers sent entries in, so I’d like to give an extra special thanks to Cakelaw of Laws of the Kitchen and Zabeena of a
A Lot on my Plate for putting in the effort to come up with two delicious looking dishes!

Get more details about participating in a future Dinner and a Movie here. Click on the photos to go to the original posts and check out their blogs:-)

“A colourful, spicy Indian curry to match the colour and complexity of the interwoven storylines of Monsoon Wedding.”

“This film is a feast for the eyes in vibrant orange, it is set in the Punjab, and I’m a predictable Pavlovian dog: one twang from a sitar, and I’m salivating for Turmeric, Coriander and Green Chillies. Chicken Tikka ticks all of those boxes, and is, moreover, the starting point of lots of hybrid food, in short, the embodiment of cross-cultural merging and melting of cultures, which fits the film perfectly.”

- Zabeena from A Lot on My Plate

“Monsoon Wedding is chock full of scenes of the hectic New Delhi street scape, depicting the ubiquitous food scene. It only seemed natural to do a post on chaat, Indian street food.”

    • Thanks for being our host this month Marc - an awesome movie choice, and a classic I'd never seen before.
    • Sorry Marc! I'm not good with participating in events, but since video stores have gone the way of the dodo here, I can't quite expand my movie vocab to be able to join. (it's the first I've heard of Monsoon Wedding!) Rest assured if it's a movie I love (er... Joy Luck Club, hehe), I'll join (if it were for that movie, I'd even host!)
That being said, I do like the dishes you've shown here-- I'll have to give the Chicken Tikka a try since I wasn't able to get good CTM here. :) And thanks for the tip on the Japanese grocery-- that was a fun shopping trip!
    • I seriously need to pull myself together and play with you guys soon. Indian is my fave, and I missed the boat. Too much going on. The entries all sound great. Will be eagerly awaiting next month's theme.
    • I can just smell those intoxicating spices! Sorry about not entering. I'm still trying to get back on my blogging feet after the big move. Very slow.
    • Mmm, the prawn curry is particularly enticing.
    • I had been working on a bhelpuri post for later this week when yours came up in the reader. I do adore it. And, I am glad you got at least a couple entries for dinner and a movie.
    • sweet. when i made an indian banquet my hair smelled like spices for days... not to mention the kitchen.

Indian bazaars are the best for rare ingredients. apparently mustard oil is illegal for consumption.

      Looks delish!
